Inter-School Wushu Competition 2007

Good Work everyone! Temasek JC ranks National 4th in A Division Boys. This was the first time i participated in the competition and it sure felt different from last year when i was merely a spectator.

Allow me to describe the events on each day.

Monday 9/4/07

Events: International Routine Nan Quan (Southern Fist) (A Boys)
Participants: Song Yan

The event was supposed to start at 6 but it was delayed till almost 7.30. A lot of us were tempted to go home but we stayed to cheer Song Yan on. Even pros can be nervous you know, though he was sleeping half the time while waiting for his event (from 11.30 to 7.30). His event had 6 people. At least one of them was from National Team (they train an insane number of times of 6 days a week i heard). There was at least 2 strong people excluding Song Yan but one of them was quite injuried. Song Yan did us proud by clinching Silver.

Total no. of points for A Boys: 5

Tuesday 10/4/07

Events: 4th Routine Broad Sword (A Boys), 4th Routine Straight Sword (A Girls)
Participants: Alwin, Li Min, Sze Ying

Alwin's event was at 3pm. There was about 2 or 3 strong opponents excluding himself. There sure was stress especially being the last person. The National Team member got a shockingly high score. The 2nd last person also did very well. Alwin did us proud by winning the 2nd last person by 0.02 points and clinched Silver. It was worth my time serving him water and grooming his appearance while waiting for his turn.

I didn't stay for Li Min and Sze Ying's events but i heard they did quite well too though not in the top 4. Well done people!

Total no. of points for A Boys: 10

Wednesday 11/4/07

Events: 4th Routine Cudgel (A Boys), 4th Routine Spear (A Boys)
Participants: myself, Song Yan, Alwin, Guan Wen

My event was at 3 with Song Yan. I was terrified, seriously. Even though i did sleep for a while. Song Yan went up first, scoring a rather high score. After seeing some of them did their routines, i felt more confident. How naive was i. I didn't screw up at all but i lost badly. I got 2nd last with another person. Though there was a few that was only 0.01 or 0.02 above my score. Coach says its because my basis of foundation is not there and there was a feeling of stiffness and fright in my actions. Oh well, the experience counts. But Song Yan did us proud by cliching Bronze even though he only practised for like, 1 week? Pros will be pros. Too bad i don't have his video since i was competing.

The next event was 4th Routine Spear. Guan Wen was too nervous, Coach says. But he didn't do too badly nonetheless. Alwin was pretty good. But this is where the competition turned ugly. For some unknown reason his 0.05 was deducted from his score. This had never happened before. Actually we do know what is happening. Another school's coach is trying to be funny apparently. Our teacher-in-charge was not very useful either for refusing to appeal. I wonder whats his reason? Was it sheer annoyance of trouble or fear of trouble? However there was 4 unbelievable strong opponents in this event and they all took the top 4 positions. So we decided to let it pass.

Total no. of points for A Boys: 13

Thursday 12/4/07

Events: First International Chang Quan (Long Fist) (A Boys), First International Straight Sword (A Girls), Second International Cudgel (A Boys)
Participants: Wai Yeow, Jia Yi, Chen Shao

First international Chang Quan and First international Straight Sword were both the 2nd events of the day. While testing grounds, Wai Yeow was still very relaxed and his moves were not at its best. Thank mother nature for adrenaline. Despite not pracitising very hard for this season, Wai Yeow did us proud by clinching a bronze. Actually i don't understand how he can still be so good even though he's so slack. 8 years of foundation sure wasn't for nothing.

Jia Yi's event had 6 people and she also did well by clinching a Bronze. She's also the only newbie getting a medal despite starting wushu only last year.

I didn't stay for the last event but i heard that the incident occurred again. This time he was deducted 0.2 points out of 10 (FYI, 0.2 is A LOT in wushu). Because of this his ranking fell from Silver to 4th placing. Geez.

Total no. of points for A Boys: 17

Friday 13/4/07

Events: Second International Routine Cudgel (A Boys), 4th Routine Straight Sword (A Boys), 4th Routine Cudgel (A Girls), 4th Routine Spear (A Girls)
Participants: Chen Shao, Wai Yeow, Guan Wen, Sze Ying, Li Min

I only stayed for Chen Shao's event. Actually didn't intend to stay for any but Coach caught me sleeping and wanted me to go help Chen Shao. Oh well. This time the corrupted judge wasn't at Chen Shao's court and he did us proud by cliching a Silver. I didn't take the video well cause the gold awardee keeps blocking me and i was squeezed at one corner already.

I heard that none of the other events got into top 4th but everyone did their best. So well done!

Total no. of points for A Boys: 21

At this point in time, we are ranked national 4th with Hwa Chong and National JC tailing closely behind us. Victoria was first, Meridian second and Anderson got third. National JC was no longer a threat as they do not have anymore events. The only event left was Group Event which any school can participate once, twice or none. Hwa Chong has one more event which it will win us as long as it can secure the third position. I think they had 17 points. So our main focus is to not let them get third. How does poisoning or tripping them over sound? Lol. The first and second places were already secured by Victoria and Meridian because they are too strong. Heard that Anderson's Group Event is also very strong so by right the first 3 places were already taken away.

Tuesday 17/4/07

Events: Group Event
Participants: Wai Yeow, Chen Shao, Song Yan, Alwin, Guan Wen, myself

Actually we were quite relaxed. We didn't try out our moves and at the very last minute we were still adding moves and clarifying things. With all due respect to other's school's hard work and perspiration, we did not deserve to win. While we were doing our routine, my mind was blank, really really blank. I can't remember doing anything at all. In fact, there were 3 moves in the routine that i rarely practised and they were all very difficult moves. I still don't understand how i did them out. Oh well. But we did great and cliched the 4th position. For some reasons, Anderson lost to us by 0.01. Hwa Chong was supposed to win us but they did a stupid error which cost them 0.2. Yishun JC was the unexpected one. We did not expect them to win us, attaining third place. Actually one of them dropped his weapon, which cost 0.5 points. However only one judge saw so it was pretty useless. As usual my dear teacher-in-charge for unknown reasons refused to appeal to the central judges. If not we would have gotten third.

Total no. of points for A Boys: 24
Rank: National 4th

Actually throughout the whole competition we were very angry with the school which protrayed itself as corrupted. It wasn't just the belief of Temasek but also other colleges as well. So we kind of staged the walkout.

Ranks for A Boys
1st VJC
2nd MJC
3rd AJC
4th TJC

The various top 4 JCs discussed and we decided to walk out when the award was announced for that school which happened to be right after MJC. Since all the schools have gotten their awards before MJC, when MJC got its award, all of us immediately left. It's pretty obvious which school is corrupted. I wonder how the students think of their coach. Sure they were strong, but they shouldn't have gotten their rank.

All the other JCs were crowding around with each other, declaring that we won without being corrupted. It was kind of funny.

It was really a good experience.

Oops this post is too long.

I will review some other things in my next post.
