Sony Ericsson said they don't want to be a sub-participant in Google's entry of the mobile phone market. While it's true that Google wouldn't want half the world to know that HTC was the one who actually made the phone (and contributed a lot of input, I'm sure), the fact remains that the letters "HTC" appears on each Nexus One and HTC did get a lot of recognition from this collaboration.

I would say Sony Ericsson could have benefited a lot if they had hitched a ride on Google now. After all HTC is well known for its Android phones due to the fact that it launched the first few Android phones and its Sense UI makes Android absolutely gorgeous. HTC continues to have advantageous relationship with Google with regards to Android, though notably Motorola is catching up (with rumours of Motorola Shadow being Nexus Two).
